Sea of Silent Dreams – A vision re-ignited by Team Sail Like A Girl

As I continue to cheer on Team Sail Like A Girl in their race to Alaska ( ( I have been reflecting on the very potent experience I had when I was also cruising along the magnificent coastline of British Columbia.  The reason for my trip was to test the idea of offering floating leadership retreats.  That voyage was so profound that it gave birth to a dream, a call to world leaders to come and experience the profound beauty and silence of this ocean and coastline and to be so transformed that they work together to heal and care for our beautiful planet and human family.  Read my post next and how this amazing team of women sailors has reignited my dream.

Sea of Silent Dreams

This is a story I wrote for David Suzuki’s website. David is one of Canada’s foremost champions of the natural world.  He recently asked us to share our favorite story about the Canadian Pacific Ocean as part of his efforts to help bring awareness and appreciation to this magnificent area. At the end of our story he asked us to write a note to our fellow Canadians in reference to our subject.
This is mine.  It is about a Leadership Retreat I did many years ago on a cruising yacht along the central coast of British Columbia and the epiphany I had at that time about how the world might change.

here is the link to David’s website if you would like to read more stories and get to know about his wonderful work.
Sea of Silent Dreams

An Invitation

Thank you Dr. David Suzuki for your invitation to tell my favorite story about Canada’s Pacific Ocean.  I have been waiting to extend an invitation of my own for the past twenty years, here it is.

Dear World Leaders

Yes, I DO mean each and every one of you.   All of you who have the decision-making power and money in your hands; kings and queens, presidents and premiers, chief executive officers, boards of directors across the globe. All of you who are shapingour world today and paving the way of the future for our precious blue-green planet.

You are here by invited to come upon a floating leadership retreat that will depart from the lovely port of Vancouver, British Columbia and journey up the mystical coastline to the home of the spirit bear.  Our escorts will be pods of dolphins, Orca whales, seals, sea lions and flocks of seabirds.  At night you will sleep under a dome of stars that will cradle you as you rest, perhaps more deeply than you have in a long, long while.

It may be misty or even downright sopping wet, so for sure, do bring your rain gear.  You will be provided with a full set of fleece wear, made in Canada, of course, and also woolen blankets and moccasins designed especially for you by the First Nations Tribes who are the sovereign keepers of the land and sea in this area.  They await your visit with as much urgent hope as I do, actually I would say, a million times a million more !!!

Please, please, say you will come.   I know it will be well worth your while.

So what is this gift that is inspiring me extend such a bold invitation to heads of state and corporate giants?  What on earth could be so important that I am asking you to come all the way to the no-man’s land of the northern British Columbia Pacific Ocean?

In order to explain, I will share my story of making this trip almost twenty years ago.

We were creating a pilot program for executives and leaders, my two colleagues and I.  Just three staff and one brave business leader, conducting an experiment to see how feasible it might be to offer leadership retreats in this way.  I am a leadership coach and have learned that nature is a powerful ally in the fulfillment of my life’s calling.

Our journey was being made on a magnificent cruising yacht, an old forestry boat that had been decked out in high style, except for its huge noisy diesel engine borrowed from a transport truck.  I was already convinced that our client would have an impactful experience, just getting away from the office and being surrounded by gorgeous nature while we did our sessions together on board.

Little did I know that I was the one that was in for the greatest transformation.

We began our voyage in Bella Bella.  You may have heard of it, as there are currently designs to run an oil pipeline through this pristine area where gentle, wise people have lived and sustained their culture of balance and harmony for thousands of years.

We were blessed with radiant sunshine that first day and even though I am very used to the many natural wonders of my home and native land, the power and magnificence of this untamed wilderness was completely captivating.  As our captain expertly navigated us into a small cove that first evening, after several hours of cruising, something very amazing happened for me at the end of my work day.

I was tired and still a little anxious about whether this experiment was really going to work.  Here is what happened next.

The boat came to a stop and the anchor was securely set.  After the surging ocean all day, it was amazing to see that here in our wee cove, the water like glass.   As it was bathed by the soft light of sunset, perfect mirror images of the mountains that surrounded us sent the peaks diving deep into the clear cold depths.  I was at the stern, just staring off and thinking about what we would have for dinner.

With a simple push of a button the captain turned off the huge noisy engines.

Instantly I was enveloped in a silence so pure and encompassing that it made its way like a laser beam right into the center of my heart. Everything in my universe had become utterly and completely still.   I sat transfixed for what seemed like hours yet was more like a few minutes.  Everything fell away, every modicum of stress, every tight grip in my body, every layer of subtle protection around my vulnerable human core, even my sense of identity and self-importance in my place in the world.  Nothing remained but utter peace and openness that had no boundary.

I felt a relief I had never experienced before.  Something very primal in me realizing that I had ached for just this experience, so utterly and completely free from the noise and clamor of life, since my very first breath.  I felt like I was home and that there was absolutely nothing that I needed to fear, nothing I needed to have. I felt full and complete and at ease in every cell of my being.

As I came back into awareness after this precious journey into infinite purity and stillness, I noticed that great rivers of tears were running down my face.

With utterly no conscious thought I heard myself say:

At that exact moment, the silence and crystal, clear, evening light was filled with the cry of a single bald eagle:   “Yes! Yes! Yes!!!  Bring them here, I am waiting with hope in my heart, also.”

My epiphany has been shared with many clients and friends over the years.  Now as our precious ocean and her coastline seem more at risk than ever of losing their purity and ancient power to move the hearts of man, I write to all of you.

Please, Please, say you will come.  I will figure out the details along the way. Perhaps some of you who are not managing the strife of war or corporate take-over, might volunteer your airplanes and company jets to help bring your fellow leaders here.   I will ask Prime Minister Harper if the Canadian Navy might step in to help with providing some vessels for our voyage.  I am certain the First Nations leaders would be most eager to offer their magnificent canoes for our sailing summit.

With respect for your courageous call to leadership, I send this request.

I await your replies with wild daring that you might just take me seriously.

I hold in my heart the vision of how the world might change in the hands of leaders whose own hearts have been held in the loving embrace of this magnificent sea of silent dreams.

Paddlers Wanted!  Anyone with an extra canoe or really BIG boat? 🙂

As I read this post again today,  I had another aha moment!  My vision of having powerful, global leaders come to be blessed by this sacred place is happening in an unexpected way through Team Sail Like a Girl’s racing voyage.  These women are some of the most amazing leaders I have met in all my years of being a personal development and leadership coach.  They are sailing and racing to inspire girls and women to dare to challenge themselves in physical adventures and to model amazing team work and the willingness to dig deep to contribute their greatest potential to their endeavor.  I pray that they are feeling blessed, renewed, uplifted by their time in these sacred waters.

And the world is watching them!!!!  I have been overjoyed to see the various videos, magazine articles and social media posts of the many people from around the world who are moved and inspired by their voyage.  And they are sending us their breath-taking photos and videos, sharing my beloved sea of dreams with the world.  Maybe, just maybe there are a few world leaders watching as these sailing girls call us to be our very best selves.

So I will extend my invitation once again.

Please leaders of our world, who have the power and resources to heal and change our world, please, please come to the Northwest Coast!  Allow yourselves to be blessed and embraced by one of the most inspiring places on our planet. I promise you will be profoundly impacted.   AND!!!!!!  I now happen to know some radically awesome sailors who just might be willing to crew for our floating leadership retreat and share their wisdom with us.   🙂

A Week of Launches!! June 4-10

What a wonderful week of creative joy this has been.

The week actually began with the completion ceremony for “Teachers Yoga” at my local Waldorf school.  An inspired group of teachers and staff completed thirteen weeks of postures, pranayama, meditation and yoga nidra.  We celebrated our time together with a beautiful ceremony of puja, the offering of the elements, to each other, to all the kids and staff of the school and even our beloved planet earth.  Thank you to these dedicated educators for their commitment to self care and modeling mindfulness for their students, colleagues and school community.  Let’s do it again in the fall and grow our group. 🙂

Soul Spaces and Lifestyle Graces is launched!  My wonderful friend and colleague, Amy Curran and I held our first Introductory Class in Amy’s very own Soul Space.  We shared our vision and passion for supporting people in creating a space in their home where they can nurture their soul and did some fun energy balancing practices as an example of the simple ways we can take care of our selves even with super, busy lives.  We also created small, exquisite “altars”  selecting the colors, objects from nature and art prints that express our unique creative self.  Such a simple, meditative experience that provoked profound, heart felt sharings around our circle.  The evening ended with the writing of intentions for how we want to re create our homes as sanctuaries and our daily lives to include activities and routines that make our souls sing.  We will continue to offer these intro classes each month so stay tuned for upcoming dates.

The grand finale!  Team Sail Like A Girl Boat Blessing Ceremony.

As with each of these creative projects, this ceremony occurred in response to a long held prayer for me.  I LOVE LOVELOVE being an officiant for all sorts of ceremonies including space blessings.  A year and a half ago, I followed my guidance to be an Uber driver as a way to connect more with my local community and create opportunities to serve. Each time I would go out to drive I would say a prayer: “May those who are seeking me find me and may I find those I am to serve.”   Sure enough, one of the members of this amazing sailing team was a passenger and that led to them requesting that I guide them in their Boat and Journey blessing ceremony.   These eight women are competing in the r2ak race to Alaska, a 750 mile daunting voyage with no motor, up the coast of British Columbia to Ketickan.  About fifty of their family and friends gathered with us on their boat and together we prayed, sang, cried, laughed, cleansed and blessed the women, their vessel and their voyage.

I was profoundly moved by this experience and was not sure exactly why.  Later it occurred to me that just as I am daring to allow my calling to be a vessel for God’s Grace in the world to guide me into uncharted waters and requires all my trust and confidence in the unseen touch of spirit, these courageous women are launching out to sea with only their own compelling calling and fierce trust in themselves, each other and the very same guiding light.  God speed and safe passage, dear Soul Sisters. Thank you Team Sail Like A Girl for the honor of serving you!

Let us help you create spaces and practices that support your soul at home!

I am excited to introduce you to a new “Graceful Living” offering in partnership with the wonderfully creative Amy Curran.  Through delightful synchronistic events, Amy and I were brought together and discovered that our passion for creating beautiful, soul filled spaces and helping people manifest their visions and dreams through each stage of life were completely aligned.   With only a few conversations we realized that we were both in the perfect place and time in our lives to express this mutual creative joy and VOILA!!

Soul Spaces, Lifestyle Graces is a design and coaching service to help you make your home a sanctuary of beauty, harmony, peace and joy and provides support for creating and sustaining holistic home practices and lifestyle choices that nurture you and help you be your best self in the world.

Imagine having a corner, room or entire home designed by Amy,  with exquisite colors, scents, sounds, furnishings, sacred items and SPACE that is so inviting, soothing and inspiring that you are easily drawn there every day.  Imagine giving yourself a few minutes or an hour or two to BE WITH your self in this space, caring for your body, mind, heart and soul.  Perhaps doing some yoga stretches, breathing exercises, meditation, journal writing, intention setting and even just sitting and staring off.  With each visit to your sanctuary, you are building a force field of peaceful, empowered, harmonious energy, inside and around you that is there to welcome you, help you shift gears into a self nourishing experience and sustains you as you re engage with your life in your home and in the world.

And now imagine that you have a champion and cheer leader, a coach (Grace) to join you in your space, perhaps blessing your sanctuary with a custom created ceremony, and guiding you in envisioning, planning and implementing some practices and routines that can become part of your daily life. Perhaps you want some help with greater flexibility, calming an over busy mind, soothing emotional stress, creating some “fill your well” practices.  Perhaps it is diet and exercise that is your focus or wanting  more play and creative expression in your life.   In the change process, the journey from inertia to lift off is always the greatest challenge.  Company is so much  more supportive than willpower and having a practice partner and guide can make all the difference in setting realistic goals, getting started and maintaining consistent practice.

If you find yourself entering a new stage of life;  marriage, new baby, empty nesting, healing from illness, divorce, retirement or are ready for a space and lifestyle upgrade or make over, please contact us.  Amy and I are available in person and through video conferencing to support you in creating a lifestyle and home space that feeds your soul and fills your life with grace.

Initial Consultation

We will meet with you in your home (in person or across the virtual air waves) We will listen to your needs, wishes, hopes and dreams, both for your home re design and lifestyle changes and then get back to you with a proposed plan.

Implementation Package

Using our Lifestyle and Space Design charts and guided Visioning Process we will help you identify and articulate very specific and realistic goals and then create a custom plan for you, for space creating and or lifestyle routines and practices implementation.  We will work with you through the creation of your space, including clutter removal, remodeling, decor selection and set up.  We will help you find the natural order and rhythm in your day and how to build supportive practices that reflect your personality, aspirations and demands of your life.  If desired, we will design and schedule a series of home practice sessions for you to do on your own or with Grace as your guide.

As with any change process it is necessary to be patient and persistent.  We provide support coaching calls and visits to help you sustain your momentum and continue to make your house your home and your life your joy,  over the years and stages of life.

img_3904.jpgI recently had the joy and privilege of sharing yoga in a grade 5 class that was studying ancient India.   For ten days, I joined them for their first hour of school.  Together we lit candles and incense on our class alter, chanted OM, bowed to the light within ourselves and each other, did sun and moon salutations, meditated with lovely chimes and glitter bottles, snoozed in deep relaxation and learned that all of life flows like a wave to the state of peace and integration when we breathe and watch with our witness awareness and experience every moment fully.

Having been introduced to yoga by my mother at a similar age, it was profoundly moving for me to “pay it forward” to this next generation of young Light Beings.   The gift of yoga has, by far, been the greatest boon of my life.  For such a non-bendy body like mine, I am certain it has been a life saver, however it has been the deep abiding love, wisdom and ability to be fully engaged and present in all aspects of my life,  that I have gained from these ancient practices that has filled me so fully and given me my life’s purpose.

Through out the time of our classes together, I was not always sure how much they were absorbing, but I trusted that simply having the experience would enrich them and plant seeds that would bloom in their own ways.

Little did I know just how much transpired and was transmitted in our brief time together. Blessings upon blessings to their teacher,  Ms. Amy, who released her curriculum goals and practiced right along with us.  What a powerful impact the example of one trusted adult can have!

Please enjoy these amazing, stunning cards the children drew and wrote as their sharing back to me.  ALL OF THIS!!!! in ten short hours of practice!!!!  Imagine what our world would and could be if all children were given the gift of yoga in their lives.

PLEASE! PLEASE! PLEASE!  Consider taking your kids to a yoga class and if you would like me to bring yoga to your family or your school, let me know.  The children are calling! Let us respond!

“Dear Grace,

Thank you for teaching me that yoga is not all about being the best at the movement. It’s about the experience. It fills me with happiness.  Love Iris”

“Dear Grace

Thank you for  teaching me how to sit and watch instead of listen to Monkey Mind. Before I started yoga, I wasn’t aware of liking this, disliking that, but now I see that it has always been there, and I will try to keep him calm. p.s. my monkey mind is not as cute as yours.  Love Milo”

“Dear Grace

Thank you for telling us to hold the posture just one more breath or one more second than we thought we could. It showed me that I could stay and stand up for myself.  Love Susu”

“Dear Grace

Thank you for helping me slow my fast life down. Before you came and did yoga with us I rushed through life. Now I do things slower and better.  Thank you so much!!! love Mateo”

“Dear Grace

Thank you so much for doing yoga with our class. You made me realize that yoga is not just about poses and stretches but to worship the great gods and spirits. You taught me how to do hard poses, use my third eye and how to keep calm and centered. And I’m very grateful for that.  Nicola”

“Dear Grace

Before we started doing yoga together, a lot was going on in my family and we were so busy focusing on Christmas and everything you get and not taking time to be still and take time to listen like you taught us. Grace, this Christmas year you gave me something far more loving and kind than a toy doll or a pet pig. You gave the gift of love and nothing is more important to me. I’m a very grateful child this Christmas year.  Love Nora”
